About LikelyWord

Word help that still feels like solving

LikelyWord was designed around a small frustration: many word finders technically answer the question, but bury the answer you probably need inside a long list of obscure words.

Our approach is to make everyday answers easier to find and give you control over how much is revealed. It is useful for crosswords, anagrams and casual word puzzles, with no account required.

How results are ranked

Every list on this site is ordered by real-world word frequency, using SUBTLEX-US data drawn from the language of American film and television subtitles. A word you would actually say out loud outranks one that only exists in a dictionary appendix. The How It Works page walks through the full method, including how patterns, blanks and hints are handled.

Where the words come from

The word list is general US English rather than any single game’s official dictionary. Entries that appear capitalised in our source and are absent from a standard English dictionary — usually names, places and abbreviations — are kept but clearly marked, because crossword setters and most word games will not accept them.

Hints before answers

We treat a hint as a valid answer in its own right. Hint mode reveals the word’s length, then its first letter, then its last letter, then its vowel count, before ever showing the word itself — so getting unstuck never has to mean spoiling the puzzle.

Privacy, plainly

There is no account, no login and no saved puzzle history. What you type into a solver stays in your browser session. The details are on the privacy page.

What LikelyWord is not

LikelyWord is not an official Scrabble®, Words With Friends® or crossword dictionary. Those products and trademarks belong to their respective owners, and their accepted-word lists may differ from our general English source.

Feedback

This is an early release. If you spot an awkward result or have an idea for a useful filter, we would like to hear it as feedback options are added.
